                         IPL- Sports Or Entertainment

The Indian Premier League, the latest passion of the nation, has turned into a source of entertainment. It is not just a sporting event in the true spirit. For the past years IPL has generated tremendous interest in our country. It has successfully merged cricket with demands of the public and market. People enjoy the game because of the variety it offers, players from different countries constitute a team, involvement of all glamorous personalities which adds to the pleasure in watching the game. Earlier cricket lovers got the opportunity of watching the world cup series once in four years only. But now, IPL is providing the opportunity of watching competitive world cricket every year. The aim of IPL was initially to play cricket. But of late, it became a pure source of entertainment. Unlike One-day cricket and test matches, which at times become monotonous, IPL has turned out to be a three-hour entertainment like a movie. The IPL matches are so crisp that it attracts people from all age group. Also the paparazzi style reporting done by certain TV Channels and tabloids have made the IPL into something much more than cricket. Everybody appears to get recharged after the match. Despite the so many positives that could have come about from this potent mix, today the core product is losing out. There aren't too many Indian stars emerging from the ranks of the IPL teams, and while the IPL remains the flagship sports property for Indians, don't expect anything but hype at the mega-auction next year. It has become a melting pot of business, entertainment and politics - with athletes as an afterthought. This may or may not help the league in the long run, but as long as the product is successful, society will be going along with the game.

INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE
(IPL)

As it is known that cricket has been one of the most spectacular and popular sports of world. It has been prayed in India like any other sports of the world. Just like football is for Brazil in the same way cricket is for India. For many years in India has been only playing cricket just on the international level just like a country. The revolution in the way of cricket when the idea of Twenty- 20 championship and EPL was brought as a combination in the world of cricket introduced by Mr. Lalit Modi and BCCI in the year 2008 after India won T-20 world cup in the year 2007.  The idea of this change was taken from the EPL i.e. English Premier League of football where we have clubs from different cities making their way to reach the top and get the Barclays trophy. The IPL (Indian Premier League) is a Twenty-20 cricket tournament played in India. Twenty20 cricket is a limited over form of cricket where both sides have just 20 overs to score as many runs as possible without losing all their wickets. Initially there were 8 teams participating in this year in the year 2008 from major cities like Delhi, Punjab, Kolkata, Rajasthan, Mumbai , Hyderabad etc. plays each other over 72 games before an eliminator and two qualifiers discern who will play each other in the final. Once the 72 league matches have been played, the top two sides play each other in the first qualifier. The winner automatically goes through to the final. The eliminator is then played between the 3rd and 4th side. The winner of eliminator then plays the loser of the first qualifier in what is called the second qualifier. The winner of the second qualifier goes on to play the winner of the first qualifier in the final. The teams for cricket being financed or sponsored by the business groups like Reliance, Kingfisher, Deccan Airlines, Royal Challengers and many known personalities like Sharukh Khan, Pretty Zinta etc. They gave sponsorship to these teams and make them play trying to win the IPL trophy. The IPL offers a total of 25 crores in prize money for champions 10 crores , for runner up 7.5 crores, for third place 3.75 crores and in fourth place it is 3.75 crores. There is no prize for the remaining teams.  It must be noted that IPL rules mandate that half of the prize money must be given to the players. This rule makes the game more interesting for players and they try to give their best during matches. This league gives chances to  many new faces and some of these new faces make their way into the Indian team like  Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Shikhar Dhawan and many more. As we speak off about this league it has completed its 6 seasons and yet has a great popularity all around the world. This league has given chance to many new players to show their talents and fulfil their dreams. The players that participate in the IPL are not limited to India many renowned plays of other countries also play for the teams like Chris Gayle has played for Royal Challengers Rajasthan, Lasith Malinga has played for Mumbai Indians, Andrew Symonds has played for Deccan Charges etc. This has also helped in making a friendly relationship between the rival teams and also among the nations. As IPL is cluster of the players that are new as well old, it gives a fair chance of competitions for the new players and gives them to learn some new thing and tricks from the experienced players lie Chris Gayle, Ricky Ponting. It has been beneficial for the new players as they get experience playing with experienced players, the chance to show their talent and can get opportunity of selecting in Indian cricket team. IPL is beneficial for the country also as IPL is expected to bring the BCCI an income of approximately US$1. 6 billion, over a period of five to ten years and it helps in building relation between overseas country.

Indian premier league (IPL)
The Indian premier league (IPL) is a T20 cricket league introduced by Lalit Modi and Board of council for cricket in India (BCCI) and currently being supervised by Rajeev Shukla.
It consists of players from all around the world, and is one of the richest leagues in the world. The Premier League is the shortest form of professional cricket with just 20 overs per innings, the league is well promoted and commercialised on national TV. The brand value of the 6th edition of the IPL was estimated US$2.99 billion. Previously the major league sponsor was DLF but currently it is sponsored by PEPSI, who won with a bid of ₹396.8 crores over AIRTEL. The league is broadcasted live on SET MAX in India and on YouTube worldwide on the web.
The IPL is a T20 cricket league introduced in 2008. During these 6 seasons of world class cricket entertainment the league has gone from strength to strength and gained enormous success. There are majorly 8 teams participating in all 6 seasons of the IPL.
·       Chennai Super Kings, CSK
·       Delhi Daredevils, DD
·       Kings XI Punjab, KXIP
·       Kolkata Knight Riders, KKR
·       Mumbai Indians, MI
·       Rajasthan Royals, RR
·       Royal Challengers Bangalore, RCB
·       Sunrisers Hyderbad, SRH
And there are 3 more teams who participated in the league temporarily but have been ceased to exist due to financial crisis.
·       Kochi Tuskers Kerala, KTK
·       Deccan Chargers, DC
·       Pune Warriors India, PWI
In these 6 seasons the league has been won by 5 different teams:
·       2008 Season 1 - Rajasthan Royals
·       2009 Season 2 - Deccan Chargers
·       2010 Season 3 - Chennai Super Kings
·       2011 Season 4 - Chennai Super Kings
·       2012 Season 5 - Kolkata Knight Riders
·       2013 Season 6 - Mumbai Indians
From the above statistics it is clear that The Chennai Super Kings are the most successful team in the league, winning the trophy 2 times and reaching in finals 3 times.
There are 5 ways that a franchise can acquire a player, In the annual auction, signing domestic players, signing uncapped players, through trading, and signing replacements. In the trading window, the player can only be traded with his consent. The franchise will have to pay the difference between the old contract price and the new contract price. If the new contract is worth more than the older one, then the difference will be shared between the player and the franchise selling the player.
Some of the team composition rules are:
Minimum squad strength of 16 players plus one physio and a coach.
·       No more than 11 foreign players in the squad and maximum 4 foreign players should be in the playing eleven.
·       Minimum of 14 Indian players must be included in each squad.
·       A minimum of 6 players from the BCCI under-22 pool in each squad.
IPL though being very successful and entertaining but it has also gone under many speculations. Many events of spot fixing, betting and money were witnessed, where players were caught on the phone tapings or secret cameras exchanging money or fixing actions on a particular ball.
The premier league involved Bollywood tadka as well as business tycoons where many Bollywood superstars were co-owners of some teams:
Example:
1.     Shahrukh khan, Juhi chawla : Kolkata knight riders
2.     Preity zinta : Kings XI Punjab
3.     Shilpa shetty : Rajasthan royals
4.     Vijay mallya : Royal Challengers Bangalore
5.     Mukesh Ambani : Mumbai Indians
And many Hollywood and Bollywood superstars also performed in the opening ceremony of the league and came to watch the matches of their favourite teams on several occasions.
The league is a full on entertainment event watched worldwide between the months of March and April, the league has not only been held in India but also abroad in South Africa (Second season).
